History

Our Faculty was founded in the 1967-1968 academic year under the name of The Faculty of Science and Social Sciences. That said, the history of certain departments within the faculty dates back to the Chair of Child Health which was founded by Prof. Dr. İhsan Doğramacı on February 2, 1954 as part of the Faculty of Medicine, Ankara University, which also marks the foundation of Hacettepe University. The Department of Psychology was founded as the first one within the Child Health Institute and Hospital at Sıhhiye Campus in 1957. Subsequently, the Department of Sociology started to provide academic education in 1964. In 1965, the Department of English Language and Literature and the Department of French Language and Literature; in 1967, the Department of German Language and Literature and the Department of History of Art were founded. The Department of Turkish Language and Literature and the Department of Philosophy began their academic life in 1969. The foundation of Department of Anthropology and the Department of History dates back to 1971. Next year, in 1972, the Department of Information Management and the Department of English Linguistics were founded. The Department of American Culture and Literature was structured as a department in 1994. The Department of Archaeology and the Department of Translation and Interpreting began their training, education and research activities in 1982. Since 2012, The Department of Modern Turkic Languages and Literature and since 2013, the Department of Turkish Folklore has been providing education.
